Democrats fearfully sit by as U.S. prepares to become officially pro-torture

After Senators John McCain and Lindsey Graham and John W. Warner opened up the door to the Democratic party to go headlong into the battle against any interrogation bill, the entire Democrat party chose to sit back and let the Republicans sort it out, and a “compromised agreement” is ready to roll through Congress.

From CNN:

President Bush hailed the agreement, saying it will preserve the “most potent tool we have” in the war against terror — the ability of the CIA to interrogate detainees and “get their secrets.”

It breaks down like this:

1) The U.S. will now be pro-torture.
2) Republicans get to look good making the U.S. pro-torture.
3) Democrats are impotent lap dogs.

Democrat leader Harry Reid scoffed at Republicans and it’s “Do-nothing Senate,” all the while showing his plan was to do nothing. After six years now of doing nothing, it is apparent that democrats are either in cahoots with the Republican party, or at very least are equally soul-less and without morals or dignity. Sadly, these are your only options as voters.

Digby’s Hullabaaloo has a good take on it, as does Marty Lederman. “U.S. to be First Nation to Authorize Violations of Geneva,” he writes.

Remember when we were a two-party system? Those were the days, eh? So now, what is worse, the party that acts immorally at all times, or the other party that quietly and sweetly allows them to do so?

Just remember, in the end, all citizens get to share in it. Because when this passes - and it will, as there’s no chance Democrats will do anything but meekly whine before it sails through along party lines - it will be official: All Americans will be pro-torture.

Along party lines? No. Most of the Dems have said or implied that they’re gonna vote for the “compromise” torture bill (military commissions bill) and they’ve said or implied that they think they can outfox Karl Rove that way, but myself, I reckon the ol’ fox has got a few more tricks up his sleeve, including an October Surprise that’ll be a real blast.

The Dems are convinced, and probably correct, that if they vote against the “compromise” torture bill then then they’ll be smeared as was Max Cleland, four years ago, in 2002, by the Rovians.

I think the Dems are wrong - - I think the Dems should say, of the suspected terrorists, “TREAT ‘EM LIKE NAZIS! Follow the Nuremberg precedents and give ‘em a fair trial and hang ‘em if they’re guilty of a capital crime!” . . . but the Democrats are afraid that “TREAT ‘EM LIKE NAZIS!” wouldn’t sound tough enough, so they’re ducking and weaving and making me wonder whether they’ve really got the guts to fight Karl Rove, so what kind of guts have they got at all?

Of course, I hope and pray to be wrong.

[…] In the U.S., that schtick is obviously fear. That it works so well is truly amazing. How many of us know people that are educated and erudite, yet seem to have a deep belief that we are in a great “War of Civilizations” and that if we do not go on a constant attack, give up civil rights and our national soul, then everyone in the U.S. will be forced to bow to Mecca and speak Arabic?
