[...] In the U.S., that schtick is obviously fear. That it works so well is truly amazing. How many of us know people that are educated and erudite, yet seem to have a deep belief that we are in a great “War of Civilizations” and that if we do not go on a constant attack, give up civil rights and our national soul, then everyone in the U.S. will be forced to bow to Mecca and speak Arabic?
Along party lines? No. Most of the Dems have said or implied that they're gonna vote for the "compromise" torture bill (military commissions bill) and they've said or implied that they think they can outfox Karl Rove that way, but myself, I reckon the ol' fox has got a few more tricks up his sleeve, including an October Surprise that'll be a real blast.

The Dems are convinced, and probably correct, that if they vote against the "compromise" torture bill then then they'll be smeared as was Max Cleland, four years ago, in 2002, by the Rovians.

I think the Dems are wrong - - I think the Dems should say, of the suspected terrorists, "TREAT 'EM LIKE NAZIS! Follow the Nuremberg precedents and give 'em a fair trial and hang 'em if they're guilty of a capital crime!" . . . but the Democrats are afraid that "TREAT 'EM LIKE NAZIS!" wouldn't sound tough enough, so they're ducking and weaving and making me wonder whether they've really got the guts to fight Karl Rove, so what kind of guts have they got at all?

Of course, I hope and pray to be wrong.
