MIWOMIT Presents: VD is for Everybody

Hey everyone, welcome to the premiere edition of “Movies I Watched on My Ipod Theater” (MIWOMIT). Today, we look at a classic of its genre “VD is for Everybody.”

Watching “VD” was simultaneously one of the most refreshing, and troubling things I’ve watched on my Ipod recently. An unidentified singer pleasantly croons that Venereal Diseases can affect anyone:

VD is for everybody
Not just for the few
Anyone can share VD
With someone nice as you

VD is for everybody
Darlin’ have no doubt
That anyone can get VD
That’s what it’s all about.

This Public Service Announcement, made in 1969, lets us know that we are all capable of catching VD, whether you’re a librarian, professor, butcher, baby, guy playing at the beach with his child, etc., as the one-minute, one-second video that goes along with the song highlights people in a wide range of fields, and points out that, yes, even they are at risk of getting VD.

The song itself is one of those haunting melodies that will be stuck in your head for months. The footage is stylishly laid out, as the director takes what could be just a simple montage, and instead creates a community of potential VD sufferers. It’s truly a work of art, at least in the field of PSAs.

If you look deeper at the video, however, a horrifying truth becomes clear. The video highlights 14 people, 13 white, one black. The point hits you like a hammer – white people are at least 13 times more likely to get VD than anyone else. If “VD is for Everyone” teaches you anything, let it be that.
