Murdoch doesn’t get WSJ, but gets AP to follow his style of inventing controversy

While Rupert Murdoch’s bid to make the Wall Street Journal an official GOP publication was laughed off, he must still be pleased that his style of journalism has spread like the plague.

One of his favored techniques - the “Some people are saying …” concept of journalism - has been grasped tightly by many in the media. An example, the Associated Press story “Bush veto forces Dems to weigh difficult concessions.”

President Bush’s veto of an Iraq war spending bill that set timelines for U.S. troop withdrawals puts new pressure on Democrats in Congress to craft a compromise even as their caucus grows more fractious on the topic.

The situation frustrates Democrats, who won control of the House and Senate in an election that largely focused on Iraq.

Moreover, Democrats showed impressive solidarity in passing the bill that Bush vetoed Tuesday, losing only 14 House Democrats while holding 216. Top Democrats say they have no hope of replicating that showing once they begin making even modest concessions in response to Bush’s veto.

Now here are all the quotes used in the story from Democrats:

  • A new spending bill “has got to be tied to redeployment,” said Rep. Rahm Emanuel, D-Illinois, the House’s fourth-ranking Democratic leader.
  • “[T]he question is how much policy and change we can push in Iraq.” — Emanuel
  • “The president wants a blank check. The Congress is not going to give it to him.” — Nancy Pelosi.
  • That’s it. The story’s premise that the Democratic Party is fractured on the subject is based on nothing but assertions that “Many Democrats are saying … ” and by quotes from Republicans. The actual Democrats they spoke to said nothing of the sort.

So in the end, Murdoch didn’t get the WSJ and Dow Jones, but he should be proud with how well he’s helped to destroy the world of journalism in the U.S.

      “Some people are saying”

It’s the “they” we all refer to so often when we talk from our buttocks with nothing to back our positions but air.

You would think that journalists would feel some ethical twinge to do better than just air, but some say FOX “journalists” are clowns. As a matter of fact, I think I was the one who said it just now.

And why we are on the subject about feigned controversy, is it ethical to even put Nancy Grace and/or Glenn Beck on the air? Some say they suck. Again, it was I who said it just now.

^ “while” not “why”. Some say I post crap without reading it.

[…] I agree that I sighed in relief when I saw that Rupert Murdoch’s bid for the Dow Jones was rejected. Murdoch, however, wasn’t put off in the slightest as he continues to make his move on DJ and its signature publication, the Wall Street Journal. […]
