33 years later, Barry Bonds and George W.Bush are no Hank Aaron and Richard Nixon

In 1974, Hank Aaron, a man who built a career from the Negro Leagues to the Major Leagues, broke Babe Ruth’s record for career home runs. Months later, a paranoid and detached Richard Nixon, hellbent on making the federal government into a political arm of the Republican party while engulfed in an unwinnable war, quit as President rather than fight impeachment charges.
In 2007, Barry Bonds, a man who built his body with steroids and built his reputation on surliness and detachedness, will break Aaron’s record. And a paranoid and detached George W. Bush, who has thus far successfully turned the Federal Government into a political arm of the Republican party while engulfed in an unwinnable war, will not quit or be impeached and will continue to do as much damage to the U.S. Constitution and American psyche and reputation as humanly possible.
Things just aren’t the way they used to be.

Hammering Hank was a great player. (He may have even hit as many home runs as Josh Gibson.) But a damn good player in every aspect of the game. And a good guy too.
“while engulfed in an unwinnable war”
Uhmm, it all fits together very nicely. Except for one slight historical transgression that I will not mention, else I screw up a rather nice analogy.
