July 4, 2008: I declare my independence from fear

July 4, 2008 by William K. Wolfrum

I was born into a country at war with the bloodthirsty, inhuman animals of North Vietnam.

Growing up, I cannot even count the times I looked to the skies in fear of nuclear missiles coming to destroy everything I cherished. I grew up terrified of the evil Soviet Empire.

When President Ronald Reagan began his “War on Terror” against Nicaragua and other Central American regimes, I worried for the safety of my nation.

As a young adult, I cheered on my nation as we chased the animal known as Saddam Hussein out of Kuwait.

On Sept. 11, 2001, I was very afraid.

In 2003, I was afraid of the horrifying destruction that Hussein could bring to the United States and the world.

Today is July 4, 2008.

I declare my independence from fear.
