Yuriorkis Gamboa - A fighter to watch; Kimbo Slice? Not so much
In the world of beating people up, Cuban boxer Yuriorkis Gamboa showed that, while it’s no sure thing he’ll be a great, has definitely proven he’s a heck of a lot of fun to watch. Gamboa, who fights like a smaller prime-time Mike Tyson, got up from a first-round knock down and knocked out the formerly unbeaten Marcos Ramirez in round two. It wasn’t Gamboa’s best, but he proved a lot.
In the world of Mixed Martial Arts, however, a much-ballyhooed prospect saw his bubble popped in the most humiliating way. Kimbo Slice, who many MMA fans have long called overrated and unimpressive, was scheduled to fight the legendary and old Ken Shamrock. A late cut forced Shamrock out of the fight, and he was replaced by Seth Petruzelli. And Petruzelli took advantage of his opportunity. Here’s the fight description from Sherdog.com:
Round 1
Petruzelli throws two quick teeps looking to keep a rushing Slice away from him. As Kimbo closes in, Petruzelli lands an awkward short right that drops Slice to the mat. As Kimbo makes it to his knees, Petruzelli attacks with a volley of hammerfists, and pushes Kimbo onto his back. Petruzelli doesn’t pause with his punches, and continues smashing away with a barrage of right hands until Troy Waugh rescues the prone Slice just 14 seconds into the first round.
Yep, the heralded Slice was done in 14 seconds. I’m thinking Shamrock - who’s pretty well shot - is kicking himself for missing out on a chance to pummel on Slice.
So, boxing fans, look forward to seeing more of Gamboa. As for Kimbo Slice? Well, we wish him well in his future, non-fighting ventures.
