Hey, William.
Kudo's to you in this whole affair -- first in being diligent enough to track 'em down, bold enough to bring it to light, and cool enough to not get miffed when they hand the credit for exposing Eisenstadt to others.

Your comment on the pathetic state of mainstream media in the age of the 24 hour news cycle really resonate with me. It seems like we are witnessing -- in a relatively short period of time -- the collapse of real journalistic skill and integrity. While not a journalist myself, my wife was trained as one at Northwestern's Medill School of Journalism where they really "train 'em up right." We are both mortified at what passes for journalism these days. REALLY mortified. I don't think that I am being overly dramatic when I say that the decline of the "Fourth Estate" threatens our very democracy. Unfortunately, ask me to come up with a solution and I am pretty short on ideas. Of course, exposing dramatic journalistic lapses like this may ultimately shame them into being more careful checking their sources, but then call me a an unfettered optimist!

OK... that does it. You're on my short list of "gotta read" blogs.

It's easier to just figure that everything and everyone on the internet are hoaxes.

I mean, c'mon. An ex-Deadhead living in a Secret Lair in North Carolina with internet service? A pretty woman with a parrot* living in Costa Rica spending all that time indoors on the internet and not at the beach in a bikini? Right.

Besides, Bob already outted himself--he's really a 14 yr old female CIA agent living in a yurt on the Russian Steppes.

*not sure what the parrot has to do with it.

Andrew Sullivan fell for it, too? Figures. Just read the Times piece and came by to congratulate a fellow member of the "reality-based community."

This is not quite as wild and woolly as the Tanya Head case -- the celebrated leader of a 9/11 survivor's group whose survival story turned out to be an utter fabrication that held up for years -- but it's still damned good. Kudos to yudos.

I actually picked the story up here in Brazil (I'm an expatriated Brooklynite):

By the way, if anyone was wondering, I can vouch for the reality of Perez-Peña of the Times. Went to college with the guy.
