From the Sports Desk …

Thoughts from an occasional sportswriter:

  • Tiger Woods is playing on the PGA Tour again! Finally we can all stop the pathetic facade of pretending we care about other golfers.
  • Juan Manuel Marquez’s knockout of Juan Diaz was a true lightweight classic. While I readily admit to being in the tank for Diaz, Marquez showed just how much class he truly has and how much fight he has left. The loss leaves Diaz in a strange position. His performance was brave and skillful, but he couldn’t overcome the naturally smaller Marquez. Combine that with his loss to Nate Campbell and you wonder where Diaz goes from here. He still can win more belts, but if true greatness is what he’s after, it’s starting to look like he just doesn’t quite have enough to get to the top. We’ll see what the young, intelligent Diaz will do next.
  • Oscar De La Hoya is just thinking about retirement? Good God man, enjoy your promoting, your mental facilities and your life. Your boxing ability has left town.
  • Let’s see, Ronaldo totally screws over Flamengo and signs with Corinthians. Then he’s fined for playing fast and loose with curfews at Corinthians. Methinks the World Cup great is not taking his return to the Brazilian League so seriously.
