No, you aren’t a Libertarian

March 23, 2009 by William K. Wolfrum

There’s been a lot of ruckus from the far-right of late about how they’re actually Libertarians now. For them, here’s a very quick and easy method to test their Libertarian cred:

1. Do you think Gays and Lesbians should be allowed to marry?

2. Do you think Gays and Lesbians should be allowed to adopt children?

If you answered “no” to either of these questions, you aren’t a Libertarian. You’re just some prick that doesn’t want to pay taxes.

It would be amusing if not so pathetic and sad, as to how many former Bush supporters have run to hide behind the libertarian banner in light of the embarrassing and dismal Bush years.

I must say, however, I rather enjoy calling them out when they are espousing libertarian ideas as a criticism on Obama by saying things like, “Hey, didn’t you vote for and defend Bush’s policies all those years as he resided over one of the largest expansions of Government in US history.” And their feeble attempts at defense are precious. I almost feel sorry for them.

indeed dgun that’s a good point isn’t it? That so many conservatives call themselves “libertarians” when they’ve been rooting for GW after all of those bailouts, spending, war, domesting spying, torture and other horrible things we probably don’t know about yet that his administration supported…

[...] As Lyndon LaRouche supporters and faux Libertarians trickle to Town Hall events to disrupt the discussion of health care reform, the mainstream media has not only reported it as “grassroots uprisings,” they’ve gone so far to actually try and fan the flames of madness: The most disturbing account came from Rep. David Price of North Carolina, who spoke with a stringer for one of the television networks at a large town-hall meeting he held in Durham. [...]

    Great post!

Anyone who supported Bush is not Libertarian. In addition to blowing up the deficit, he expanded the government’s ability to spy on citizens with no oversight! Oh, and let’s talk about subsidies to oil companies…are they asking for increased gas prices?

I think the two biggest the faux libertarians seem to be neglecting are their support of war and their almost racist hatred for migrants.

Agree with everything except the last sentence. May I suggest a better one?

If you answered “no” to either of these questions, you aren’t a Libertarian. You’re just some prick that…

proclaims to be a champion of smaller government and individual liberty except when it counters your particular flavor of faith. You are just fine with Big Government in one’s bedroom.

One more thing…there are many libertarians who don’t want government in the marriage business AT ALL. Instead, marriage should be a private ceremony. Civil contracts can accompany such ceremonies. And enforcement of legal contracts should be the only way the State should be involved.
