England finds a new place to dump its garbage – Brazil

July 8, 2009 by William K. Wolfrum

From the “Department of WTF?” comes this endearing story via Globo in Brazil. It seems that some companies in England have found a clever way to get rid of excess garbage – by stuffing it into containers and shipping it to South America.

From Globo:

About 300 tons of garbage in England has been found inside of containers in Porto de Santos, on Monday. The load was sent by two companies, and should have contained plastic for recycling.

The containers had arrived in Brazil last week, but had been only opened on Monday. A team of inspectors from the state of Ibama went to verify the load, and took a scare when the doors were opened.

“This is a disrespect to our country, we are not the trash dump of the world”, said an inspector.

The state of Ibama announced that the shipper and transporter will be fined, and that the containers must be taken back to England within 10 days.

Another 750 tons of garbage from English shippers were found in containers in the state of Rio Grande do Sul. Inside one of the trash-filled containers included a note which read “Here are toys for the poor children of Brazil. Please wash before using.”

    That’s just really unbelievably crappy.

I’m amazed. Actually, I’m somewhat surprised that American companies didn’t have anything to do with it. This sounds like an American idea to me.

Vamos mandar o lixo de volta para a inglaterra.

I watched that on TV, but I didn’t find any information that would specify that that cargo wasn’t plastic for recycling. They showed plastic bottles, plastic bags, plastic computer cables, plastic, plastic… I would be outraged as well if I saw food or some other kind of garbage, but as far as the news goes, it’s just plastic for recycling.

R$155.000 fine to each company? That’s ridiculous. It should be US$300.000, at least!

    sorry about that.

In Alabama, we get the same treatment. Especially the ‘black belt’, which is called the ‘black belt’ for it’s rich black soil, not for all the shit the rest of the country likes to dump there.

It is shameful! An affront! An insult! An outrage! An debauch!
They are humiliating, depressing, mortifying us.
    Unthinkable crappy.
Brazil is not the trash dump of the world.
I repeat Dgun’s words: not for all the shit the rest of the world likes to dump there.
And do not forget Chernobil: milk producers from Holland tried to sell to Brazil a contaminated cargo.
Considering this case in Brazil, we can imagine Very Well what such kind of ‘wise’ people are doing with other countries in Africa, India, South America (Pacific coast)…

England is so crap they cannot deal with their own garbage. Of course, they dont know how to recycle! They put huge black garbage bins in front of their houses and a tiny tiny black box for the recycling materials in front of the same houses. And after that they say “recycling is mandatory” Ridiculous! English people, you dont know where to put your garbage? Here’s a tip: there’s a huge garden area just behind “Her Majesty’s” Buckingham Palace, as well as all that huge area in the Highlands! Crap British people. And in all those 1.000.000 rooms in every single Palace in Britain, there’s plenty of space.
The sad thing about this is that there are those motherf***ers in the harbors that “let” these craps go inside our country.

Yes fellows, that’s the treatment they’ve been given to Brazil since XVI Century. In my opinion it’s a nice opportunity to the government buy the weapons and strike them up. But I guess the 600 thousand Brazilians living in UK aren’t offended about that.

I am Brazilian and I am outraged. To think that proper old England would take it’s trash to another country. Brazil is already plagued by how much garbage it accumulates on it’s own, it doesn’t need England making it worse. I’ve read about the fines Brazil is issuing to its shipping companies for importing the trash, now I want to know what England is doing to the companies who EXPORTED the trash.

According to this artice/video http://news.bbc.co.uk/2/hi/uk_news/england/8270605.stm Britain was also unaware and it seems as though this was just some compaies trying to make money by ruining even more of the world.

Noth sides claim to have launched investigations, but I haven’t found anything uncovered by those investigations. I really want to know how this thing plays out and who I should be mad at.
